“Lame Claim To Fame” – Weird Al (Southern Culture On The Skids Parody) [YouTube Official Music Video + Lyrics]

This week has been a whirlwind of hyper-goofy parodies and biting satire, and today, Weird Al Yankovic has given us the seventh of eight videos to be released in conjunction with his brand new record, Mandatory Fun.

Instead of being a direct parody of any one thing in particular, “Lame Claim To Fame” is a pastiche — that is, a style parody — of Southern Culture On The Skids. The tune gets its main riff from SCOTS’ already-bizarre “Camel Walk” and Al subs in lyrics about coattail riders, name droppers, and celebrity-obsessed internet users.

The video is a stop-motion adventure through celebrity scrapbooks, thick with SCOTS references all the way through. With Weird Al portraying frontman Rick Miller, the animation style has equal influences from South Park and Robot Chicken, but director Tim Thompson does an excellent job of keeping it fresh. Check out the clip above.

Mandatory Fun was released July 15th on RCA. Stream the whole album and read our review right here at Zumic, or purchase the record on Amazon. Al has one video left to release to complete his eight videos in eight days, so check out his Zumic artist page for more.
