Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O is releasing her debut solo album, Crush Songs, and she's premiered the first official single along with an accompanying music video.
"Rapt" is a stripped-down, melancholy track, with only a thin guitar and a few layers of Karen's plaintive vocals. The lo-fi recording may be a purely stylistic choice, but it really allows her melody and lyrical power to stand at the forefront. The Barney Clay-directed visuals follow suit, with a minimalist underwater theme that still evokes strong emotion. Check out the clip above.
Recorded between 2006 and 2007, Crush Songs may follow the stylistic precedent set by "Rapt." Karen said in a press release:
When I was 27 I crushed a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours.
