"I'm John Mayer, and I'm ready to be a star!" says John Mayer, standing in front of a green screen cityscape in the opening shot of his new music video.  The singer-songwriter, known for his iconic Instagram stories in which he "teaches" fans how to create the perfect smoky eye, just dropped an amazingly absurd music video for his single, "New Light."  Check it out above on YouTube.

Dressed in baggy striped pajama pants and a dirty, oversized sweater, Mayer does some cringe-worthy dance moves in front of an array of green-screened backdrops, including the White House, the Eiffel Tower, a ski slope, a random office, a sports car, Times Square, the Grand Canyon, and even the pyramids.  Mayer is quite the world traveler — and he can even fly!  When he is not awkwardly dancing, waving to himself in a field with a zebra, or making weirdly serious facial expressions into the camera, he is shown swimming through the air with a bunch of goldfish in front of a waterfall.  The special effects also include a number of faded reflections of Mayer's face, overlapping each other in the clouds.

All these cheesy yet somehow amazing visuals are made even funnier by the fact that they have nothing to do with the actual song.  In his lyrics, Mayer laments his love for someone who just sees him as a friend.  While the song has a clear narrative, the video does not have any sort of plot or reason to it, besides the occasional appearance of his presumed green screen love interest, who is shown sitting in an office, riding in a car, and drinking wine while talking on the phone, never acknowledging Mayer.

The video was made by the company Celebrity Status Music Video Service, as shown by a blue copyright screen at the beginning and end, which misspells Mayer's name as "Client 1026 - John Mayor."  Mayer commented in a Tweet:

I needed to make a video for New Light but nobody could agree on a budget. (MUSIC INDUSTRY amirite?) So I went to a place downtown and made this with a company that usually does birthday and Bar Mitzvah videos.

Mayer's awareness of his emergence into becoming a meme is also noted in the YouTube title for his video: "Premium Content!"

"New Light" is Mayer's first new work since his 2017 album, The Search for Everything.  At this time, it is unclear if the single will be part of an upcoming album.  For more, check out John Mayer's Zumic artist page.
