Death Grips have never been a band that's predictable. They dropped a new album this past November, Government Plates, with no warning at all, and today they released the first part of a double LP to be released later this year entitled The Powers That B. The first half of the album is called "Niggas On The Moon" and it features Björk on every track. You can stream it in full above.
If this first part is any indication, The Powers That B is going to be Death Grips' strangest release to date. The whole album is chopped and screwed, with broken up electronic beats, random bits of harsh noise and a combination of vocals between rapper MC Ride and drummer Zach Hill. Trying to find Björk's samples on every track is like a treasure hunt. Everything she contributes is mixed in with the instrumentals in the background, but her yelps and remixed voice are apparent on every track. In terms of evolution it actually seems like MC Ride is developing as a rapper. He hasn't changed his style, which means this album sounds as aggressive as ever, but he showcases that he does have a flow and his rapping still continues to be the ultimate accompaniment to the raucous music.
As usual, the production is where Death Grips stand out. Everything on this album is so out of the box and wild, you actually have no idea where any track is heading. There are so many twists and turns throughout, it remains as unpredictable as the band's reputation.
