Los Angeles-based DJ duo DJDS — Jerome Potter and Sam Griesemer — have established themselves over the past several years with a couple of atmospheric albums, remixes of huge pop songs, and collaborations with Kanye West. This past week, they released "No Pain," a new single featuring an impressive group of singers in Charlie Wilson, Khalid, and Charlotte Day Wilson.
On a recent MTV News interview of the duo, Griesemer explained how "No Pain" evolved as their "chance to combine three monster R&B voices." Taking things farther, Potter teased the full-length album which at this time does not have a release date or title announced, saying that the song reflects "the spirit of the entire album, like this combination and juxtaposition in textures, weaving in and out."
True to their word, the song juxtaposes the three vocal textures quite seamlessly. The final piece is a heart-achingly angelic experience. It expresses a touching contrast between Khalid's youthful energy and Charlie Wilson's soulful experience. Charlotte Day Wilson adds the tender refrain, "Baby I know that you've been hurt before," which leads into a masterfully produced gospel round to end the song.
The music video, directed by Matt Sukkar, shows how love can offer solace in the face of fear. Starring actors Mekhi Lucky and Eloisa Santostells, it tells the story of a young romance. After escaping to a hotel outside of town in a red Cadillac, they are confronted by a lion. The most striking surprise, however, is not the lion itself, but the lion's different eye colors — blue and brown — the same as the Lucky's. Unfolding into a powerful scene, the video compliments the tranquil intensity of the song.
"No Pain" is available on major streaming services. Stay tuned for more info.
