Last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, indie rockers The War on Drugs were the night's musical guests. They stopped by to perform "An Ocean In Between The Waves," a song from their latest album release, Lost in the Dream. Watch their performance above.
Soaring keyboard effects and a steady drum beat lay the groundwork for Adam Granduciel's dreamy vocals. Horn player Jon Natchez adds a bottom heavy sound with baritone sax to the uptempo song. I asked him what horn he played to open the song, and here's what he told me:
@italianmojo887 2 horns: bari sax + a weird one w many names: flugabone, marching trombone, or via @thoughtmusic (its master) bass trumpet

Adam's solo towards the end causes the tune to explode with energy, and impresses Fallon so much that he comments, "Oh my goodness, that's the way to do it!"
Lost in the Dream ended up on many music critics top ten list for 2014. You can listen to it in its entirety here on Zumic. You can pick up the album on Amazon (Vinyl, CD, MP3) and iTunes.
