Rival Sons are a hard rock band from Long Beach, California. In their latest song, "Open My Eyes" they tap into Led Zeppelin's deep groove of "When The Levee Breaks" while showing their ability to pump out muscular riffs and searing vocals. Watch the official music video above, via YouTube.
The song is very much a continuation of their last album, 2012's Head Down. There is a retro and raw psychedelic sensibility, but the recording is super clean and modern. In addition to the drum groove being almost identical to Jon Bonham's "When The Levee Breaks," the production aesthetic with aggressive compression and phasing is also in play here. The soft guitar breakdown is also reminiscent of the famous Zeppelin tune from their fourth album. Of course, when Zeppelin exploded on the scene, critics accused them of ripping off earlier artists too. "Open My Eyes" is certainly not the most original tune in the world, but it has its place for people like me who like adrenaline rushing loud rock music with solid foundation and melodies.
It's also worth mentioning that the music video is visually stunning. Lead singer Jay Buchanan has some freaky facepaint going on, lead guitarist Scott Holliday is defying space and time, and there's a rocktacular spark effect in the nicely lit warehouse setting.
Rival Sons' fourth album, Great Western Valkyrie, is due in June on the UK label Earache Records. See below for all the ordering options. Some of the deluxe editions are already sold out at the label's website shop. You can hear a 22+ minute preview of the album at Earache Records' YouTube.
