Yesterday was the 33rd anniversary of John Lennon's tragic death. As tribute, Nicolas Jaar (one half of Darkside) shared a mix called "Our World" that had some clear references to the late Beatle.
Though most of its hour-long runtime is filled with ambient electronica the likes of which didn't exist in Lennon's time (though his experimentation with tape loops probably contributed to the birth of electronic music), "Our World" begins and ends with Lennon-centric audio. The mix commences with two clips of Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football: one of him interviewing Lennon in 1974, and the other of him gravely announcing the star's death in 1980. From there on out, until Lennon's "Oh My Love" closes out the mix, his voice is only heard in manipulated, unrecognizable fragments, like the ghosts of John Lennons past. Jaar mixes in plenty of other voices and sounds (most recognizably Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"), most of which sound otherworldly, and comes out with a product described by one SoundCloud user as "an hour of mental purification."
This comes the same day that Chris Holmes, Paul McCartney's touring DJ, posted a “Beatles / Paul McCartney / Wings DJ set 2013″ mix, which you can hear right here at Zumic.
