Doom metal these days can seem like a giant pissing contest; many bands come off sounding like they're trying to out-heavy, out-fuzz, and out-evil one another. Meanwhile, Philadelphia's Crypt Sermon are getting back to the genre's roots with truly epic heavy metal songwriting and blistering shred guitar.
Crypt Sermon draw heavy influence from bands like Mercyful Fate, Dio-era Black Sabbath, and Candlemass. They take the best parts of traditional heavy metal and classic doom to create a sound all their own and free of pretension. Whether you're into doom, death, stoner, thrash, or power metal -- really any other kind of sub-genre you can think up -- there's something here every breed of metalhead can enjoy.
While Crypt Sermon are a relatively new band, they feature members of Ashencult, Hivelords, Infiltrator, Trenchrot, and Labyrinthine. Their debut album, Out of the Garden, drops February 24th.
