John Mayer's Paradise Valley album is set for official release on August 20th, but it's been made available as an advance free stream on iTunes starting today.
The album finds Mayer embracing rootsy rock and roll while also staying true to the light pop that made him the star who he is. Overall, the guitar playing is exceptional. He's long been a master of technique, and he really digs in here with playing that simply sounds great. We also hear some honky tonk country with slide guitar and railroad drum beat. In light of Mayer's recent vocal health issues, his voice sounds great. Perhaps a little more subdued than his previous work, but it fits with the overall feel of the album.
The song with Katy Perry, "Who You Love," is a stunning love tune that's produced brilliantly. The other notable guest appearance is "Wildfire" featuring Frank Ocean, which is a soft slow ballad clocking in at a short 88 seconds and featuring no Mayer vocals.
