Portugal. The Man and Local Natives appeared on last night's Austin City Limits, both delivering stellar performances of indie rock.
Portugal. The Man and Local Natives Live on Austin City Limits 1.25.2014
Portugal. The Man kicked things off for the night, opening with the rollicking "Evil Friends", the title track from their most recent album. They moved into "So American" followed by the keyboard driven "Senseless," both cuts from 2011's In the Mountain in the Cloud. The Alaska-based outfit played one more older tune -- "The Sun" -- before returning to songs from Evil Friends. The set was full of fun and spontaneous energy, including a partial cover of "Another Brick in The Wall" before making a seamless transition into "Purple Yellow Red and Blue" to close the show. Check it out above.

Singer John Gourley sat down for a short interview between sets, in which he talked about growing up in Alaska and watching Austin City Limits. You can watch the full interview below.
The next set was from Los Angeles rockers Local Natives. The band opened with "Wide Eyes," the first track from their debut album. They said hello to the audience at Austin City Limits" before moving into "Breakers" from last year's Hummingbird. After "Breakers," keyboardist Kelcey Ayer said, "Tonight is a very special night for us," and he went on to tell the audience that the band just asked touring bassist Nik Ewing to join the band full time and he said yes. This news was met with a huge round of applause and the band returned to playing their harmony-rich catalog from Hummingbird. They closed the night with the raw and intense "Sun Hands," during which the stage filled with smoke and swinging lightbulbs. After leaving the stage, Local Natives sat down for a short interview and chatted about their songwriting. You can watch the full interview below.
