Madlib is getting ready to release Piñata Beats, instrumentals from the excellent album he produced for Freddie Gibbs earlier this year. Check out "Real" above, via SoundCloud.

The track starts with a sample from the 1981 film Escape from New York as Police Commissioner Bob Hauk (played by Lee Van Cleef) says "I'm about to kick your ass out of the world." This is followed by a sci-fi beat with funky fat-back drumming, which switches over after the 1 minute mark to a laid back groove with an insane amount of nuance. The lead instrument is an electric guitar, but it sounds smooth enough to be a flute sample with the way it's mixed. Percussive piano elements beneath that provide gorgeous syncopation. Definitely other-wordly. Here's the Piñata album version of the track, with Freddie Gibbs going hard on the mic (via Spotify):

You can listen to the full Piñata album with Freddie Gibbs' vocals right here on Zumic.

Order the album at RapCats.com, being released June 3 digitally and June 17 on vinyl.
