Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings continue to hold down the Old School of R&B. The latest contribution is a single that came out today, "Retreat!" previewing their upcoming album Give the People What They Want due in August.
From the opening tympani roll, the song has a vibe that sets the stage like a Spagetti Western. Then things get funky and the sound harkens back to classic pop / soul akin to Diana Ross and The Supremes. The bluesy strained vocal in Sharon Jones' voice is superb and the Dap-Kings bring a groovy swing that doesn't get tired as the expansive instrumentation opens up like choreographed fireworks in the distance. The production quality straddles the line between Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and Berry Gordy's Motown. Good stuff.
