"REV" - Reverend Horton Heat [Spotify Album Stream]

The Reverend Horton Heat is back with a brand new record. REV, the band's first record since 2009's Laughin' and Cryin', is a 13-track rockabilly stomp, full of Jimbo's psycho slap bass and more than plenty of Jim Heath's fancy pickin'. Listen in the player above.

The record begins in standard Rev fashion with the instrumental "Victory Lap" before a seamless transition into the automotive-inspired "Smell of Gasoline." "Zombie Dumb" serves as the intoxicated smoker on the record, followed by the bittersweet "Spooky Boots." The boppin' "My Hat" peps the record up quite a bit and serves jauntiest tale of a bad day I've ever heard.

The lead single off the record, "Let Me Teach You How To Eat," is full of energetic innuendo and especially shredding guitars, followed up by the swinging "Mad, Mad Heart," a track with a more classic rockabilly sound. "Longest Gonest Man" is a longtime live staple for the Rev, finally recorded after more than 30 years of playing it. The record slows down for "Hardscrabble Woman," a country ballad for all the tough-as-nails women out there. "Chasing Rainbows" rounds out the record as a wistful psychobilly rocker, and leaves you waiting for an encore.

The record is full of Rev standards. Innuendo, pretty girls, fancy cars, and faster-than-hell guitar playing dominate, but they probably wouldn't have called it REV otherwise. Overall, a solid gold record for fans of the good Reverend.
