Zumic has been working with ReverbNation for over a year helping to promote independent artists. Today, we've got a rockin' tune from Mrs. Henry in San Diego, CA. Put on your dancing shoes and check out "Rock N Roll Band" above, via the new ReverbNation player.
I reached out to Mrs. Henry frontman Dan Cervantes, and here's what he told me about the track:
This is a song I wrote about 7 years ago, classic rock & roll concept about playing in a rock & roll band. A staple in the Mrs. Henry live repertoire, I had always wanted to go Paul McCartney on a track and lay down all the instruments, and found myself in a circumstance without any band and no recording so I decided to have a go at it! I played drums, percussion, bass, guitars, fender rhodes and sang lead vocals.
It took a second to get any good at drums — and I’m still not — but it was the one instrument I hadn’t really worked at before. Once I finished laying down the “band” element of the song, I had always heard a wailing sax solo, had that Stones / Little Richard / Chuck Berry feel to it and so brought in LA session player and friend Kyle O’Donnell, who recorded on the last EP, Not The Kinda Girl, to do his thing. Kyle always knows the right thing to play. A few takes, and we were done within the hour!
Once the horns were down, there was one final addition that took it from the Faces into Mad Dogs and Englishman territory which is where Shelbi Bennett comes in. Shelbi Bennett is no stranger to singing backup, but is most well know in San Diego as lead singer of The Midnight Pine and the duo fronted folk rock band Creature and the Woods with Roger Molina. I began playing guitar & pedal steel with Creature at the end of 2014, and when the time came to finish up the song Shelbi nailed the gospel 'oohs' and 'ahhs' I was looking for. I forgot what it's like to work with a real singer and everything Shelbi sings is gold so you end up with a lot of keepers. Those vocals took the song to that place, think it's a pretty epic sound of 3 people doing that whole 70s ten piece rock n roll band thing.
You can definitely hear the Paul McCartney influence. There's also some nice country fried guitar licks to go along with that raw Jerry Lee Lewis boogie-woogie rock & roll energy. The saxophone and backing vocals add a nice polish to the song, which is a real throwback to the golden age of rock music.
"Rock N Roll Band" is the A Side of a new 45 vinyl single from Mrs. Henry, with "Come On" as the B Side. The band has a West Coast tour scheduled for Oct 13-21 starting with a release show for the new single at Park & Rec in San Diego, CA with Creature and the Woods, and ending in Los Angeles at Harvard & Stone.
