Lorde had an eventful 2014 Grammys. In addition to winning awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her mega hit song "Royals," the New Zealand songstress performed the song live with her two touring backing musicians.
Things start with a huge bass sound and pre-recorded vocal accompaniment, which builds suspense for Lorde to actually sing. When she does, she completely nails the performance. The elaborate light show raises the drama even further, as each section of the song seems to build more and more from just a few spotlights in a dark room to a sea of white light. Some of the synth grooves sound like dubstep electronic dance music meets Kanye West's "On Sight" that opens the Yeezus album. It's a fresh version of the song, far different from the studio single that we've all heard ad nauseum. A great sign that a young artist like Lorde would be experimenting and exploring her music and not content to do the same thing over and over. It's a brilliant song, and her vocals are truly beautiful.
