Rapper Freddie Gibbs teamed up with experimental garage-rock artist Hanni El Khatib to create "Satin Black." The song is the first single off CONS EP, Vol. 3, for Converse. Seems like an unorthodox match-up but the goal of the series is to bring unique artists together to make music. Listen above on YouTube.
"Satin Black," produced by Khatib, has a very distinctive sound. It begins with Gibbs' verse over a dense, somewhat distorted beat with a groovy drum pattern (similar to The Bomb Squad's production style). After the verse, the beat shifts into a psychedelic melody with Khatib's slow vocals over the music. This pattern is repeated again, with Gibbs providing vocals over the psychedelic part. Definitely a creative, unique twist for a rap song.
