Protomartyr is a band from Detroit that delivers a special brand of blistering post-punk, one that manages to sonically evoke all of the squalor and desolation of their hometown's seedy underbelly.

On their new single, "Scum, Rise!", lyrics about exploding buildings and abandoned children are viciously snarled over a barrage of angular riffs and pummeling drums. The track builds relentlessly, culminating in a desperately repeated mantra of "Nothing you can do, nothing you can do... ," all set to an emotionally volatile blend of neo-darkwave and hyper-tense garage.

The result is overwhelmingly cathartic, and even though the song ends exactly how it had begun, one gets the sense that some sort of deep understanding has been gained. Such is the beauty of good punk rock.
