John Mayer is taking a new approach to releasing music with this four-song EP titled The Search for Everything - Wave One. This mini-album is the first installment of his seventh studio LP, which was recorded at Capitol Studios.

Releasing four songs as a first wave is a novel concept. Mayer explained the concept to Rolling Stone, saying, "The price of admission is four songs... If you don't like these, don't get the next four. But if I've engendered some kind of trust that you think I'm onto something, get the next four, and come along with me on every single wave."

Inspired by a breakup (or perhaps more than one breakup), "Moving On and Getting Over" shows off Mayer's soulful side with smooth guitar playing and heartfelt lyrics. "Changing," which John calls "the spiritual centerpiece of the album," focuses on tender piano playing and honest lyrics like, "I am not done changing / out on the run changing / I may be old and I may be young / but I am not done changing."

"Love on the Weekend" sparkles with pop-rock sensibilities, and recalls Mayer's 2009 breakthrough hit “Your Body Is A Wonderland.” Closing out the EP is the piano ballad "You're Gonna Live Forever In Me," perhaps one of the most honest and soul-baring songs of Mayer's career.
