After an extended break from releasing new music as he's been promoting the movie Time Is Illmatic, Nas has released a new song called "The Season" with a J Dilla beat. Listen above and get the free MP3 download, via Nas' official Audiomack account.

Nas acknowledges his time away from making music in the first verse, showing the wit and wordplay that's made him one of the most revered MCs of all time. It's also worth noting that in the second verse he hits back at those who claim he had ghostwriters help him on previous work. Having turned 41 years old last month, Nas reflects on getting older and seeing his kids growing up. The J Dilla beat is pretty bare bones -- especially by J Dilla standards -- with a continuously repeating retro horn line and golden era boom-bap drum sound. The track sounds simple and classic, a departure from Nas' last album, the ambitious Life Is Good, released in 2012. On social media, fans have responded strongly.

In 2013, Nas invested heavily in the Mass Appeal company. Mass Appeal started as a magazine, but has been expanding its operations as a record company this year by signing Run The Jewels. So far, there's no word on a Nas album in the works.
