The Chainsmokers, no matter how indulgently maligned they are by critics in the public sphere, certainly know how to make a commercial hit. They also know how to repurpose their formulaic approach continuously into plastic electropop oblivion, and to do so successfully without much technical compromise.
"Something Just Like This," the group's newest smash hit song with Coldplay that was released as the second single from their debut album Memories... Do Not Open, is a painfully catchy tune that suffers from the manufactured framework of using repetitive beat drops as a sole vehicle to build tension. In this case, it rings as relatively insipid despite the heavy-lifting done by Chris Martin's vocal performance, which carries a rather jerky melody in the verse that never quite settles into a comfortable pocket.
Despite the song's artistic shortcomings, it peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was used as the theme song for the 2017 NCAA Men's basketball tournament. The group released an official lyric video, directed by James Zwadlo, that features some tasteful animation. Watch above.
