Brett Nelson's curious Electronic Anthology Project has covered Death Cab For Cutie's "Soul Meets Body," from their 2005 album Plans. The track is paired with another Death Cab song, "Champagne From A Paper Cup," from 1998's Something About Aeroplanes. Both tracks feature synthesizers and drum machines, with Death Cab lead singer Ben Gibbard contributing re-recorded vocals. Check out the electronic version of "Soul Meets Body," via Pitchfork.
Nelson, the bassist for Built To Spill, started the Electronic Anthology Project (EAP) in 2009 "as a one off goof project" to make electronic versions of his band's guitar-heavy music. Driven by his love of '80s synth pop, he recorded the songs in his own home studio and released them on a CD in 2010. A year later, things took off when Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis agreed to re-record vocals for EAP versions of nine Dinosaur Jr. songs. Those songs were released for Record Store Day last year on 12" vinyl.
"Soul Meets Body" and "Champagne From A Paper Cup" form the third and most recent incarnation of EAP. The songs are due for release tomorrow on limited-edition 7" colored vinyl and as a digital bundle. A regular vinyl edition will be available in August. You can purchase the first and second editions of EAP, and pre-order the third, on Amazon. You can also purchase the first two editions digitally on iTunes.
