Just in time for July 4th vacations and festivities, we have a leaked version of Beyoncé's new summer anthem "Standing On the Sun." A 90-second version of the song first appeared on a few H&M teaser commercials a couple of months ago, and a longer version surfaced in video of a live performance in Belgium, but none of these versions are quite like the full recorded track.
In Belgium, Mrs. Carter's performance included a break into a rap verse mid-song and the kind of impassioned delivery that makes Bey such a great stage performer. This recording, devoid of rapping and a little less impassioned than the live version, is less attention-grabbing than we could have imagined, but is no less of a song for it.
"Standing On the Sun" sounds relaxed, waves crash in the background and at points we can sort of hear sand blowing back and forth. It feels like we are really on the beach — warm, relaxed and too content to do much other than have a good time.
This song will not be one of Beyoncé's "big hits," it doesn't give us anything we aren't accustomed to hearing on Beyoncé track, but it'll be a nice one to spend this 4th of July listening to. In between cycles of Magna Carta, that is.
Watch Beyonce perform "Standing On the Sun" live in Belgium and tell us if you think the song is better with or without the rap verse.
