Last night, Sam Smith joined the star-studded Video Music Awards and moved the audience with a touching performance of his hit single, "Stay With Me." There were no flashy dance sequences during Smith's time on a stage, just an amazing vocalist singing a beautiful song.
Similar to the produced track, the song opens with just Smith and a piano. The song develops a full sound in the second verse with guitar, drums, and gospel style back-up vocals.
It is clear that Smith's song hits close to home for many members of the audience: Jennifer Lopez heartily nods her head along to the music and the Kardashian sisters embrace each other during the song's final chorus. Sam Smith proves that you don't need fancy costumes or flashing lights to create a crowd-pleasing performance. Sometimes all you need is pure, raw talent.
