The video for Joanna Gruesome's "Sugarcrush" is pretty much what you'd expect from a band whose name is a childish play on Joanna Newsom's name. A storm of clip art, cats, dogs, poop, motorcycling Hitlers, and other nonsensical imagery bombard you from every angle, assaulting your senses and making you wonder if this band is a total joke.
But around 30 seconds into the video, while following a margherita pizza down a checkered wormhole, it becomes apparent that "Sugarcrush" is actually an amazing song. What begins as an incoherent punk outburst quickly resolves to become a lovely shoegaze jam, complete with dreamy female vocals (which are lip-synched by burgers and pizzas in the video), an anthemic chorus and a breakneck climax. It'll make you sorry that you ever judged this book by its ridiculous cover.
Joanna Gruesome's Weird Sister is out now on Slumberland Records, buy it on the label's website.
