Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones have teamed up for this beautiful new song called "The Sun Won't Set" currently available as a free stream on SoundCloud.
The two women share more than just musical talent; they are both daughters of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, making them half-sisters. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Anoushka Shankar shared the creative process for the song and how it came together very quickly in a recording session between the two sisters and Nitin Sawhney:
This song was a great example of putting in work first in order to enable spontaneity... I sent a rough mock-up to Norah and she liked it... Before traveling to New York, Nitin and I redid a rough arrangement for her to sing over... Once we were all in a room together, we decided to chuck everything and just record live, and I'm so grateful we did... We were able to really listen and respond to each other and somehow really locked in to perform a live take together beautifully, even though the three of us had never played all together before.
Acoustic guitar, sitar, and Norah's voice all do come together very naturally. The song will be on Anoushka Shankar's album Traces of You, due out on October 22nd, 2013. You can pre-order on Amazon and iTunes. She currently has a handful of tour dates set up, which you can check out at her website.
At a concert at New York City's Bowery Electric this past Friday, Norah Jones shared that she's recording an album with her all-female trio called Puss n' Boots. She has no future concerts booked.
