Lately, Australian TV show RocKwiz has been putting together some pretty awesome performances. Last week, us North Americans were treated to Kurt Vile's May 4th cover of Neil Young's "Albuquerque," and today, the program has uploaded Billy Bragg and Courtney Barnett's May 5th cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning" to its YouTube channel. Watch it above.
Somewhat of an unlikely pairing, British folk punk veteran Bragg and local Australian indie singer-songwriter Barnett show amazing chemistry on this cover, harmonizing effortlessly and skillfully interweaving their guitar lines. Barnett, whose charmingly lackadaisical song "Avant Gardener" was one of my favorites from last year, seems somewhat starstruck by Bragg's presence, but instead of coming across as visibly nervous, she exudes an "aw shucks" attitude that makes her duet much more charming. She rips a killer guitar solo to boot.
