Chi-town artist Chance The Rapper is pushing his backing band to the forefront with the long-awaited release of Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experimental's debut album Surf. The project was released on May 28th and is available for free download on iTunes. You can stream the full album above, via SoundCloud.
The Social Experiment is a four-piece band that includes Chance, Donnie Trumpet (the alias of Nico Segal), Peter Cottontale, and Nate Fox. Donnie Trumpet serves as the group's leader while Chance is the lead vocalist. The Chicago-bred collective show their eclectic musical taste as they fuse hip hop with pop, jazz, and R&B in their sound. In a interview with the Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club, Chance stated:
The social experiment is more than just me and Donnie but it's a collective of a lot of different artists that are interested in making dope free stuff. It doesn't just refer to music, it's a blend of production and writing.
One word to describe Surf: unorthodox. Whether you are a fan of jazz, hip hop, or R&B, you cannot predict the direction of this album after listening to the first few tracks. While Chance delivers his eccentric flow on many of the tracks, songs such as "Nothing Came To Me," "Questions," "Something Came To Me," and "Just Wait" feature little to no vocals at all, just music.
The band enlisted several esteemed hip hop and R&B of artists for this album. Busta Rhymes, J.Cole, Janelle Monae, Big Sean, B.o.B, BJ The Chicago Kid, Jeremih, and Erykah Badu all made appearances on the project.
If you're bored with radio hits and mainstream artists, take your brain for a spin and listen to Surf in its entirety. Chance has already established a reputation for being a unconventional rapper. Now, he and Donnie Trumpet are pushing their band to new heights and giving their fans an even greater sound that will attract new listeners and solidify his core following.
