Weird Al's back with a brand new album, 8 brand new music videos, and some serious fashion crimes.
"Tacky," Al's much better version of Pharrell's ubiquitous "Happy," sees the star mock the relentlessly awful taste of the current generation. Yelp reviewers, Instagrammers, Ed Hardy enthusiasts, and cheapskates get skewered as Al and a host of fellow comedians prance around in clothing not-quite-as-tacky as Pharrell's hat. Aisha Tyler, Margaret Cho, Eric Stonestreet, Kristen Schaal, and Jack Black all make appearances in the video, which was shot at the Palace Theatre -- which, incidentally, was Maude Lebowski's apartment in The Big Lebowski.
"Tacky" will live on Al's new LP, Mandatory Fun, which is due out tomorrow. In addition to the new album, he's also got 7 more music videos lined up for the coming week.
Al, whose record contract is fulfilled with this album, says he may be done releasing conventional albums, so he wanted Mandatory Fun to be huge. In an interview with NPR, he said:
I wanted to really do what is ostensibly my last album with a big splash. I wanted the first week to be big; I wanted every single day of release week to be an event. I wanted a video to go viral for an entire day and have people talking about that video, and then the next day they're talking about a new video. I just thought that would be a really fun way to do it, to make a big deal out of release week.
If the uproariously cringe-worthy video for "Tacky" is any indication, it will be a big deal. Stream and read our review of Mandatory Fun right here at Zumic or order at Amazon. For more music, news, videos, and upcoming concert dates, check out Al's Zumic artist page.
