Rhode Island alt-country rockers Deer Tick have released a single, called "The Dream's In The Ditch," from their upcoming album Negativity, which is set to drop on September 24th. Despite its dour title, the track has a peppy beat and captures the lighter side of folk with chimes and bright piano riffs. Try it out in the player above.

Frontman Ian O'Neill spoke with Rolling Stone about the song's origins and explained the circumstances behind its downcast lyrics. "I wrote 'The Dream's in the Ditch' in the winter of 2012, living in Bed-Stuy between Deer Tick tours," he said. "We toured exhaustively leading up to 2013 and it kind of left me and our band feeling hopeless and disheartened. After the song was written, I started to realize that's what I was writing about: both the despair and resilience you develop as a touring musician and how that can parallel to all of basic situations in the song."
