This new music video from Idaho-based experimental rocker Youth Lagoon delivers some hi-def special effects with a profound narrative to complement his decidedly lo-fi sound.
"The Knower," a cut off Youth Lagoon's 2015 LP, Savage Hills Ballroom, begins as a haunting falsetto melody. We see the interior of an empty retirement home at night. There is a music room with a disco ball and balloons throughout the different corridors indicating that a party has just happened. We see a bird in a cage, and an elderly hand reach for a cane on the bed.
As the sampled percussion enters, the video cuts to an elderly lady walking across the pool, cooly lit by the reflections of the moon hitting the water underneath. Could this lady be the titular "Knower"? What does she know?
As she makes her way past the pool into the main room of the retirement home, "The Knower" strikes a match and immediately throws it at the curtains. She seems content, excited even as the retirement home bursts into flames and the song into a full-scale jam. Beautifully incorporated into this epic slow-mo montage are shots of the disco ball exploding and falling to the ground.
As the lady spins around inside the burning room, the bird frees himself from his cage and flies out of the window into the night sky.
