Usually, when we listen to hardcore hip hop there is a content expectation. We sometimes expect it to be only about drugs, murder, women, and fast money. Statik Selektah teamed up with rap gods Sean Price, Bun B, and Styles P to create “Top Tier.” This track gives you all of the hip hop goods, but adds a twist by shedding light on political and social awareness.
Having just released Lucky 7's first single, “Beautiful Life” a couple weeks ago, Statik is really prepping the world for the album to drop. Statik laid down a beat that sounds like they’re marching into war. Within this song the rappers touch on topics like everyday struggle, survival, and racial tensions that are going on in today’s society. Styles P raps, “Even the wise do foolish shit / Even the cop kill a kid that go to school and shit.” While the African American community still fights against police brutality in an unjust system, it’s heartwarming to see that artists aren’t above touching on these topics.
Lucky 7 will officially be released next month on July 7, 2015. Cop it on Amazon.
