When A-Trak posted his poignant and insightful open letter regarding the current state of drugs and hip hop last week, he was trying to start an open dialogue on the subject. XXL took it on themselves to help facilitate the discussion by sitting down with one of their 2013 Freshman, Trinidad Jame$, to get the perspective of a young rapper who is a central figure in the debate.

Jame$ was one of a few specific artists who A-Trak mentioned in his letter directly contributing to the relationship between hard drugs and contemporary rap, "I even think the pill popping Trinidad James himself deserves a smart interview (you know, make him sweat a little). He probably has more insight than we think." A-Trak was referencing Jame$' line in his "All Gold Everything" track, "Popped a Molly I'm sweatin'".

What's great is that Jame$ and XXL obliged the request and the A-Town MC gave a thoughtful and articulate interview. When asked if the drug use he raps about had a negative effect on his fans he responded, "But tell me this—if Chief Keef is shooting people every day, is that what you’re going to do? You got to be your own man, you know?"
