The Black Keys have released the 2nd single from their upcoming 2014 album Turn Blue. The band are clearly moving away from the heavy guitar and aggressive drumming that was the hallmark of their earlier career, and this song contains no lead guitar whatsoever. Dan Auerbach seems to be exorcising some demons, as he sings about "hell below" in the chorus and talks about carrying the weight and staying on track in the first verse. The second verse calls to mind songs like "Everlasting Light" and "Thickfreakness" - there's an intimate closeness that Auerbach expertly pours into his music. To me, the song sounds a bit like "Solitude" by Black Sabbath. Just a little funkier.

The Black Keys "Turn Blue" Lyrics:

[Verse]
In the dead of the night
I start to lose control
But I still carry the weight
Like I've always done before
It gets so heavy at times
But what more can I do?
I gotta stay on track
Just like Pops told me to

[Chorus]
I really don't think you know
There could be hell below
Below
I really do hope you know
There could be hell below
Below

[Verse]
When the music is done
And all the lights are low
I will remember the times
When love would really glow
I could dream ahead
Before my world turn blue
And the light inside
Would only shine for you

I really don't think you know
There could be hell below
Below
I really do hope you know
There could be hell below
Below
I really don't think you know
There could be hell below
Below

In case you missed it, the first single "Fever" is also currently available right here on Zumic. Turn Blue is due out on May 13. Pre-order on iTunes and you can download the first two songs instantly.
