"I Want You Back" (Jackson 5 Cover) - Janelle Monáe [SoundCloud Stream] | Zumic

As part of the deluxe version of her album Electric Lady that is being sold exclusively through Target, Janelle Monáe has covered the Jackson 5 classic "I Want You Back." While it won't follow the original as a staple on party playlists, Monáe's choice to render "I Want You Back" a softly-strummed dollop of sunshine pop was an unmistakably good idea.

Monáe's lead vocals are drenched in a sugary glaze of harmonies (courtesy of some stellar backup singers that give Jermaine Jackson a run for his money) that embellish her performance without stifling it. It's almost scary how well a grown woman mimics an eleven year-old Michael Jackson, but the only goosebumps we're getting from this "I Want You Back" cover are the good kind.
