"War Pigs" is a big time rocker that gets proper treatment here. It's such a great song, and somewhat of a surprise that the band would take such a political tone on their big national television opening night. Zac Brown takes the vocals from the beginning, and Grohl takes over midway through the song. Taylor Hawkins really stars on the drum kit, and Chris Shiflett shows off some slick guitarwork as Grohl is on full rock out mode. With four guitar players on stage, the band achieves a great rock sound that truly transforms the Black Sabbath tune into a Foo Fighters tune. In true Ozzy fashion, Brown messes up the lyrics, but we'll give him a pass.
During the interview, Grohl comes off charming as usual. He talks about his two daughters and their "questionable" music taste -- although he's quick to say that he's not one to judge. He tells a hilarious story about what it means to be a parent, and having a 3-year-old daughter who embraces gangsta rap. He also talks about his relationship with his parents, who were both musicians. During the second part of the interview, Grohl and Letterman talk about the concept behind the upcoming Sonic Highways album / HBO series and Grohl waxes poetic on how the weather makes New Orleans such a special and unique place for music.
It was a truly rockin' show, as the other guest, Russell Brand, opened up with Letterman about being sober and getting through his drug addiction as well as the revolution he's trying to start. You can watch those interview segments on YouTube (Part 1, Part 2).
The Sonic Highways album is due out on November 10th, 2014. It's available to order on Amazon. The Sonic Highways TV show premieres on HBO this Friday, October 17th.
