To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Yo! MTV Raps, clothing company Stüssy released We Were All Watching, a two-part mini documentary on the unprecedented impact that came from the first-ever all rap program on television. The series brought hip-hop to homes all across the world for the very first time, completely changing popular culture with the introduction of the revolutionary new style of music and the fashion sensibilities that came with it.
In Part 1: The Importance of Yo! MTV Raps, the history of the show is examined, from unlikely origins in Europe to huge success in the United States. Part 2: Fashion in the Golden Age of Hip Hop, examines the trends and fashions that came along with the artists and their accompanying music videos and appearances on the show.
Watch as seminal figures in hip-hop like DJ Premier, Shock G (Digital Underground), MC Lyte, Questlove, Alchemist & Evidence (Dilated Peoples), Rakim, Yo! MTV Raps co-creator Peter Dougherty, co-host Ed Lover, and more speak on the monumental effects of Yo! MTV Raps, both on a personal as well as global level.
