Courtney Everald “Jamal” Dewar Jr., more recognized by his stage name Capital STEEZ, began rapping while attending Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, NY. There, Steez came together with like-minded Joey Bada$$, CJ Fly, and producer Powers Pleasant to form the rap collective Pro Era in 2011. Sadly, STEEZ took his own life the following year.

All members of the crew have continued to honor Capital STEEZ in their music. Last week on July 7, it was a celebration of life at the Central Park Summerstage, where Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era held the first annual Steez Day show with the Flatbush Zombies, The Underachievers, and a few surprise guests.

XXL caught up with Pro Era's Dirty Sanchez, A la $ole, Dessy Hinds, CJ Fly, and Joey at the show, who all expressed great gratitude for the turn out for their brother Steez. CJ Fly says, "I'm glad people love Steez and love us to come and support because all the proceeds go to the family. That's a great thing. We sold out, 5,000 people or more, you know what I'm saying, it's amazing."

It was all love from everyone. A$AP Ferg, Smoke DZA, and Ab-Soul had surprise performances along with appearances from Talib Kweli and Cam'ron. You can see snippets of the performances, more interviews and some behind-the-scenes footage in the video above.
