"Paper The House," the first track we heard from Fucked Up's upcoming fourth album, was (on the surface at least) a pretty straightforward punk rock song. "Year of the Dragon," the band's newest addition to their Zodiac series of releases, is anything but. Listen to the 18 minute epic above.
Combining elements of sludge metal, hardcore punk, and even classic rock, Fucked Up once again prove that they're among the most sonically adventurous punk bands ever. Trying to top the ambitious, conceptual spread of David Comes to Life, the band's last album, might seem like a fool's errand, but "Year of the Dragon" is certainly another successful attempt at mastering the underused format of the punk rock opera. Tempo changes abound, guitar solos populate the song's second half like sheep in New Zealand (Pink Eyes' sparse vocals are the outnumbered humans in this metaphorical scenario) and after 18 minutes, Fucked Up have covered more ground than many bands cover over the course of an entire album, let alone one song.
