According to a statement on the artist's website, The Storm includes a "deeper look at some of her earliest inspirations - including Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson, and Big Mama Thornton." Ward explained, "For me, this album wasn't really about experimenting... it was more about simplicity, honing in on what I love about music and what makes me who I am as an artist... All of my favorite artists would tell real stories... I wanted to talk about similar things that were close to my heart. Every song become something I experienced."
