Audi, in a promotional stunt for the launch of their new A3 automobile line, brought both of their exclusive launch shows together this week through the use of sci-fi technology. With one show in New York and the other in Los Angeles, stars Janelle Monae and M.I.A. entertained audiences with their own individual performances on opposite ends of the country.

The events created even more excitement when they pulled a high tech stunt: introducing 3-D holograms of one another so they could perform M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls" on both coasts. M.I.A. performed in New York alongside Monae's avatar, who danced and flashed around the stage in the video above, uploaded by SuperPopACCESS.

While there are no further videos of the event at this time, Audi tweeted two photos from both ends of the country. The first from Los Angeles is shot at an angle that makes the M.I.A. hologram look almost real:

The other from New York splashes the Janelle Monae hologram with gorgeous waves of red and white:

This stunt puts the performers in conversation with the few other artists who have been immortalized in the new technology within the past few years like Tupac, the Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Eazy E. According to a press release the M.I.A./Monae holograms are more hi-tech than ever though, utilizing "integrated video mapping" and "3D projection mapping to add layered depth of field perception with animated graphic content." While it occasionally tends to be perceived as a gimmick more than anything, hologram technology is rapidly advancing, creating a new way to experience performances with exciting possibilities.
