Cults are set to release their 2nd album, Static, on October 15th. Before then, you can stream the entire album for free via NPR Music First Listen.
It's a relatively short album, at a hair over 35 minutes. The 11 songs seem to go back-and-forth between modern dreamy indie pop and retro psychedelic rock. The drum and bass grooves often show punk, hard rock, and even breakbeat influences. The drums and bass drop out completely many times throughout the album, creating a sense of drama as the arrangements are very dynamic and still hold together quite well.
Madeline Follin's vocals are lush, with lots of reverb giving a sense of space and deep harmony. The softness of her voice dictates the overall feel of the record, pushing the sound more clearly toward pop than rock in spite of the overall instrumentation. Brian Oblivion adds supporting vocals, as well as guitar, drums, and percussion. Even though the band is officially only those two people, they have enlisted other musicians for live performances in the past. Currently, no list of credits has been made available, so we're not sure if anyone else might have played drums or keyboard parts. We'll hopefully get that information by the time the album is officially released next week.
You can pre-order the album on iTunes and Amazon.
