Last week, T.I. shared "Turn It," a banger produced by longtime collaborator DJ Toomp that sounds like it could've been made in the mid-2000s Atlanta that T.I. was the self-proclaimed king of. As the lead single of Tip's upcoming album, Paperwork, it functions as a testament to the staying power of his proto-trap sound, but it lacks any trace of the new, weirder ATL. Enter "About The Money," which is potentially also from Paperwork, and is a song that holds aloft a Young Thug guest spot like it's the golden ticket of hip hop in 2014 (which it very well may be). Stream it above.
Produced by London on the Track, a younger producer who's one of Young Thug's go-to collaborators, "About The Money" isn't very far outside of either rapper's comfort zone, splitting the difference between T.I.'s "Ride Wit Me" and Thugger's "The Blanguage." We do get T.I. singing some higher-pitched vocals than usual, which is interesting, but mostly "About The Money" feels like an alternate reality in which Young Thug was fostered in T.I.'s Hustle Gang scene rather than Gucci Mane's 1017 Brick Squad camp. Paperwork is shaping up to be a strong return to form for T.I.
