Celebrating their 50th anniversary, the Grateful Dead will soon release an 80 CD box set titled 30 Trips Around the Sun: The Definitive Years (1965-1995). Included with the set will be a 7" vinyl containing this studio version of "Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)." Listen above.
Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux shared with the Wall Street Journal Speakeasy blog about the song and how it fit into the band's repertoire:
The raw energy of the performance is palpable. [It's] a band that was clearly enjoying what they were doing and charting the course for their future. It doesn’t really fit into any specific genre, just as the Dead’s music wouldn’t follow one genre of the next 30 years.
This wonderful slice of music from the band's earliest year was recorded on November 3, 1965 at Golden State Recorders in San Francisco, California. Energetic guitar riffs, Kreutzmann's frenzied drumming, and Lesh's running bass lines combine with Ron "Pigpen" McKernan's bluesy harp playing to give us a glimpse into the sound the band was creating at the time. Unfortunately, the track fades out, leaving us to only wonder where the song would have traveled.
For people who choose not to purchase the giant box set currently priced at nearly $700, a four CD collection that highlights songs from the band's 30 years will be available for under $40. Both collections will be released on September 18, 2015. Pick up the four CD set via Amazon (CD, MP3).
