The Pixies dropped by the NPR offices to play an almost-acoustic set for their Tiny Desk Concert series. Black Francis donned sunglasses as they played through three songs, including 2 new ones. Paz Lenchantin, who just joined the band as touring bassist, plays violin for the set.
The concert starts off with the just released "Greens and Blues," a track from last month's EP-2. Talking about the song at the time of the release, Francis said he wants to "sit in the same place that ‘Gigantic’ has sat." The song carries the same slightly forlorn feeling, with intricate harmonies and lyrics that sound like a wistful goodbye.
They move into the unreleased "Silver Snail," a morose tune with dark imagery in the lyrics. Joey Santiago's reverb-drenched guitar wails set the mood, and the song proved to be as angst-ridden and moody as anything they've done. No word on when or if this song will be released, but EP-3 seems like a relatively safe bet.
They finished with their classic "Monkey Gone To Heaven," and the small audience went wild. Paz's violin may have been too quiet to hear sometimes, but her vocals sat nicely where Kim Deal's would have in 1989. Watch the full video above.
