"Brooklyn, we are fucking ecstatic to be here," Josh Homme professed at the beginning of their set at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on Friday night.
Over the hour and 15 minute set, Queens of the Stone Age rocked out with their new album ...Like Clockwork, plus a three song encore of some classic QOTSA. They pounded through the new album in its entirety while the room full of devoted and drenched (from both the rain and sweat) fans pushed forward toward the stage.
The show opened with "Keep Your Eyes Peeled," which set the mood of the overall dark and brooding show. The energy rose and fell with each new song, but never stopped shaking the balcony. There was a definite high point during "My God is the Sun," which got the crowd moving as the band raged. The entire 1000-person venue was already drenched so they had nothing to lose.
Homme spoke to the audience between songs, thanking all the masons of the world. He made sure to call out a rather large man in the pit wearing some kind of space or knight helmet from what looked like a children's costume. He told the crowd, "That guy in the helmet, he is fucked up." Then told the man himself, "You should be proud of your helmet. I fuckin' love you man." There were certainly positive vibes in the air, despite the rather depressing, angry nature of every song.
The band finished their set, but then returned for a three-song encore. They played "You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire," "No One Knows," and "A Song for the Dead." They provided an outlet for the crowd's remaining energy, especially on "A Song for the Dead," which became more of a jam than the tightly-structured rest of the set. Or as someone outside the venue before the show called the band, "robot-tight."
