For Disclosure, 2013 was a great year. Their debut album, Settle, was nominated for both The Mercury Prize and Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronica Album. They also spent the year playing just about every festival in existence. What better way to start the new year than with a North American tour?
The 17-date tour kicked off in Toronto on January 14 and stopped in New York for three sold out nights at Terminal 5. When so much hype is built up around artists, they'll either live up to expectations or disappoint. Disclosure's Guy and Howard Lawrence met the expectations and surpassed them.
On their last night in New York, Terminal 5 was quickly filling up to its 3000 person capcity. The second opening act, Chicago rapper Vic Mensa, worked hard getting the crowd ready for the English duo. After an introduction of silence and strobe lights, Howard and Guy took their places and started the night with "When a Fire Starts To Burn." Although no reminder was needed, at the end of the song Howard yelled, "New York! We're Disclosure!"
With every new song, the space on the floor seemed to shrink, but that didn't stop the crowd from going absolutely crazy. Strobe lights and projected graphics, including the animated Disclosure face singing "Help Me Lose My Mind" helped set the mood. There was a perfect mix of tracks from Settle and their previously released songs.
Disclosure could easily have left the stage and come back for an encore. Instead, they decided to skip that and help everyone lose their mind (pun intended) in the form of "F For You" with a twist. The Queen of R&B herself, Mary J. Blige, took the stage and added new lyrics and more soul to the song. After she left the stage, Howard said what everyone was thinking, "Did that just happen?"
The final surprise was most likely expected, yet still exciting. Sam Smith took the stage to the cheers of the crowd and supplied his now famous vocals for "Latch." It was the perfect way to end a great night of dancing.
