What happens when worlds collide? This: A Miley Cyrus meets Snoop Lion meets Diplo song where nobody wins. "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" is so forced, from both a musical and visual standpoint. The song is about smoking one's blues away, a way of dealing with all the sadness and, um, heartbreak in the world today. Diplo's reggae tinged beat is sluggish and Snoop Lion seems like he's still trying to find his groove in his new "reincarnation" from his Snoop Dogg days. And then there's Miley Cyrus singing the chorus. I get it Miley, you've grown up and started hanging with rappers, but, c'mon, this is a bit of a stretch. I don't really need you appearing as a ghost in a video about deaths in the street.
The video also feels disconnected and thrown together. Smoke clouds and black and white set the atmosphere for a jumbled four minutes. Snoop appears in his patented shades and Adidas tracksuit while Cyrus rocks her "this ain't my first Coachella" baggy sweater and jean shorts. A fight breaks out? What is this song really about? I don't know. Diplo makes a cameo towards the end looking very introspective. Heartbreaks indeed.
