Recent TDE signee Isaiah Rashad just released his Cilvia Demo (despite the title, it's an actual album) today, and now we've got a stream courtesy of Spotify. Check out the MC's 14-track-long debut above.
Rashad, who recently made the move to L.A. from his native Chattanooga, Tennessee, carries his Southern influence over to this album, rapping in a colloquial drawl and drawing a ton of influence from OutKast. In a recent interview with The Fader, he locates ATLiens as the album that shifted his aspirations from becoming preacher to becoming a rapper, and he even named a track on Cilvia after one on Aquemini. That song, "West Savannah," also features another TDE youngster, the wonderful singer SZA. She and Rashad do a great job of representing TDE's second wave, now that Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock are almost all certifiable "big deals" in the hip hop world. The latter two guest on "Shot You Down," this album's last track, and sound totally at home over the song's laid-back production.
good kid, m.A.A.d city this ain't, but what Cilvia Demo lacks in epic scope and big-name collaborations it makes up for in Rashad's charming, skillful, personal lyrics. This 22-year-old has a bright future ahead of him, and this album is a sure sign of bigger and better things to come.
